German police search the home of two suspects in connection with attack in Vienna

Men are said to be linked to an Islamic extremist group and have been in contact with the perpetrator of the November bombing.

German police searched the homes of two suspects of involvement in the terrorist attack that killed four people and wounded 23 in Vienna, Austria, in November 2020. Authorities have not said whether any arrests have been made.

One of the men, Drilon G., has German citizenship, and the other, Blinor S., is Kosovar, German network Deutsche Welle reported. They are said to be linked to an Islamic extremist group and have been in contact via internet with Kujtim Fejzulai, the 20-year-old terrorist linked to EI (Islamic State) who perpetrated the attack and who was killed by the police at the time.

Investigations indicate that the two men traveled to Vienna to meet Fejzulai several times in July 2020, four months before the attack. “They met other people the Islamic movement in Austria and Switzerland,” says a statement the German authorities.

According to police, DNA the two men was found in the weapons used in the attack, and they have been under investigation ever since. They would also have d messages exchanged with Fejzulai over the internet, in order to try to cover up the connection between the three. So far, 15 people have been arrested for involvement in the attack in Vienna.

Law changes

Earlier this year, the Austrian government promised "radical reform" at the intelligence agency after publishing a report on the "failure" in the response to the November terrorist attack. Interior Minister Karl Nehammer has pledged to double the size of the country's counterterrorism operation, as well as new national security legislation.

According to the document, the BVT (Federal Counterterrorism Office, its acronym in German) had already been informed of the possibility of the attack by neighboring Slovakia. The report points to a series of failures in the attempt to contain the attack, ranked as the worst in decades. Fejzulai himself was arrested for trying to join ISIS, but was eventually released.
