Kathleen Neal Cleaver Kathleen Neal Cleaver was one of the members of the Black Panther Party and the first woman in the party to be part of the “decision makers” body. She served as a spokesperson and press secretary, also organizing the national campaign to free the imprisoned Panther Defense Minister, Huey Newton. She and other women, like Angela Davis, came to account for two-thirds of the Panthers' staff, despite the notion that the party was mostly male.
