As European countries experience a rapid increase in Covid-19 cases and impose some blocking measures, the World Health Organization emphasized that countries need to apply all tools to prevent increasing transmission in the community, with more than 37 millions of people worldwide infected.
Italy has imposed an outdoor mask mandate across the country with fines of up to 1,000 euros ($ 1,160) for offenders, and the Spanish government has declared a state of emergency in and around Madrid.
Mike Ryan, executive director of the WHO Health Emergencies Program, said that in many situations, new cases can be contained in the way that many countries have demonstrated since the beginning of the pandemic.
Countries should focus on closing transmission chains through tools such as case surveillance, case isolation and quarantining contacts, he emphasized.
Unlike China and some other East Asian countries and regions, contact tracking and isolation are often not applied strictly in many European countries. Surveillance measures are often questioned as a violation of privacy and civil rights.
Countries need to do everything possible to prevent transmission becoming excessive at the community level, said Ryan.
Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO's technical leader in combating Covid-19, also reiterated the importance of making use of all the necessary tools.
She acknowledged that it is difficult to find a balance between reopening society and suppressing broadcasting, but emphasized that it is important to engage and empower the public and allow people to take the necessary measures.
Globally, more than 37.2 million people were diagnosed with Covid-19 and more than 1.07 million died, according to a record maintained by Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, in the United States.
In India, the number of confirmed cases of the new coronavirus surpassed 7 million on Sunday, although the number of new cases has dropped in the past few weeks, even with health experts warning that the mask and the distance fatigue are taking hold.

Iran made wearing a mask mandatory in public in Tehran on Saturday, with violations punishable by fines, as the country's total number of confirmed cases is expected to exceed 500,000.
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said in television comments that anyone caught outdoors without a mask in the capital would be fined 500,000 rials (about $ 12).
Those infected with the new coronavirus who do not quarantine or fail to inform friends and colleagues about their disease will be fined 2 million rials, he said.
